Four Parallel Training Sessions


  1. Spatial Statistics

    This seminar discusses the contextualization of data analysis with location. Participants are expected to learn how to calculate and map basic spatial statistics using ArcGIS.

    Resource person:

    Dennis Dizonis an Esri-certified GIS specialist and is currently the manager of the Training Division of Geodata Systems Technologies, Inc. He has been working in the geospatial technologies industry since 2006 where he has been mainly involved in GIS training and capability development. Aside from being a GIS Instructor and training manager, he is also engaged in GIS project implementation and management for organizational customers of Geodata, which has so far already included Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Roadboard of the Philippines, Cagayan de Oro Power and Light Company (CEPALCO), and the National Housing Authority (NHA) among others. For a time during his career, he was also a lecturer of quantitative analysis at the University of the Philippines Department of Geography from 2008 to 2011, and a GIS technical supervisor for the Esri Support Services account of Concentrix Philippines from 2009 to 2011. He is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Geography, and Master of Statistics, both degrees earned from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.



  2. Infographics

    This enables the participants to learn how to clearly and concisely present data to a general audience in an interesting and insightful way; and, also teaches the participants some tips and tricks in creating information dissemination materials.

    Resource person:

    Gian Louisse Royis an Instructor and Information Officer in the UP School of Statistics. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Statistics and currently finishing his MS Statistics degree. He handles courses in elementary statistics, mathematical statistics, and probability theory. He has been an active member of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. in the Training Committee and Social Media, Information, and Communication Committee. He conducts trainings with private and government institutions with focus and expertise on infographic and factsheet design and principles. In addition, he has held several talks on different issues and topics such as proper data presentation, career talks, research writing, and many more. His interests include mathematical statistics and inferential thought.



  3. Descriptive and Exploratory Techniques in R

    This seminar is an introduction to data science analytics that will apply descriptive statistics and exploratory data analysis (EDA) in R software.

    Resource person:

    Charlene Mae Celoso is an Instructor from the UP School of Statistics. She obtained her BS Statistics degree from UP Diliman in 2015, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She is also working towards her MS Statistics degree from the same institution. As an instructor, she has handled courses in elementary statistics, introduction to programming, introduction to exploratory data analysis, and introduction to regression analysis. She has also served as a resource person in workshops on introduction to R programming and time series analysis.



  4. Correcting Common Misconceptions in Statistics: For K-12

    This seminar elucidates common statistical concepts by discussing their underlying theories and correct common misconceptions. Topics include hypothesis testing, p-value, Sloven's formula, among others.

    Resource person:

    Josefina V. Almeda, PhD is the head of agency and Executive Director III, of the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute, one of the two major statistical agencies created under RA 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistics Act of 2013, with the other one being the Philippine Statistics Authority.

    She assumed office on August 9, 2017 but PSRTI has worked with Dr. Almeda in the past in the conduct of its research and training activities where she was a resource person of various statistical courses of the then Statistical Research and Training Center or SRTC, the predecessor organization of the PSRTI.

    Dr. Almeda is a faculty of the UP School of Statistics Diliman where she held numerous positions such as College Secretary, Director of the Undergraduate Studies and technical consultant for statistical projects of several international and local organizations. A recipient of numerous awards and grants from the Philippine Statistical Association, Fajardo Foundation, Department of Science and Technology, and the University of the Philippines where she received the 2009 President’s Award for Innovation in Teaching for enriching learning through evidence-based instruction. She has been involved in local and international fora and conferences in statistics where she was a paper presenter, discussant, or main facilitator, the latest of which is her Invited Paper Session on APPETIZERS AND DESSERTS IN TEACHING STATISTICS for the International Conference on Teaching Statistics 10 (ICOTS10) held July 13, 2018 in Kyoto Terrsa, Japan.

    She holds a PhD in Education with specialization in Research and Evaluation from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). She finished her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Statistics in the same university, and has likewise taught in the Graduate programs of the College of Education and School of Statistics.
