Four Parallel Training Sessions


  1. Spatial Statistics Using ArcGIS and R

    Participants will learn how to process normal table-based statistical data and convert them into spatial datasets, which can then be used for map visualization and spatiostatistical analysis, such as cluster analysis and geographically-weighted modeling. Spatiostatistical operations to be discussed shall be performed using ArcGIS and R.

    Resource person:

    Dennis Dizon is an Esri-certified GIS specialist. He has been working in the geospatial technologies industry since 2006 where he has been mainly involved in GIS training and capability development. Aside from being a GIS Instructor, he has also been involved in GIS project implementation and management for many organizations, which has so far already included Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Cagayan de Oro Power and Light Company (CEPALCO), and the National Housing Authority (NHA) among others. For a time during his career, he was also a lecturer of quantitative analysis at the University of the Philippines Department of Geography from 2008 to 2011. He is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Geography, and Master of Statistics, both degrees earned from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He is currently pursuing another master's degree in Cartography at the Technical University of Munich in Germany.



  2. Elements of Questionnaire Design

    A well designed questionnaire is important to a successful data collection. The training on Elements of Questionnaire Design shall focus on defining the target respondents, selecting the method/s of reaching the respondents, determining question content, wording the questions, sequencing the questions, checking questionnaire length, pretesting the questionnaire, and developing the final questionnaire.

    Resource person:

    Josefina V. Almeda, PhD is the head of agency and Executive Director III, of the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute, one of the two major statistical agencies created under RA 10625, the Philippine Statistics Act of 2013, with the other one being the Philippine Statistics Authority. She assumed the directorship on August 9, 2017 but PSRTI has worked with Dr. Almeda in the past in the conduct of its research and training activities where she was a resource person of various statistical courses of the then Statistical Research and Training Center or SRTC now PSRTI.

    Prior to this assignment, she is a faculty of the UP School of Statistics (UPSS) Diliman in 1985 where she held numerous positions in the School such as College Secretary from 1988 to 2003, then again from 2008 up to 2017. She also served as Director of the Undergraduate Studies program from 2006 to 2008. She is a technical consultant for statistical projects of several international and local organizations. Professor Almeda was also a recipient of numerous awards and grants from the Philippine Statistical Association, Fajardo Foundation, Department of Science and Technology, and the University of the Philippines. She received the “2009 President’s Award for Innovation in Teaching” for enriching learning through evidence-based instruction from the University of the Philippines. She is paper presenter, discussant, or main facilitator in local and international fora, conferences and meetings in statistics such as the United Nations’ Network of Training Institutions, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP). Professor Almeda finished her MS and BS Statistics at UP School of Statistics and holds a PhD in Education with specialization in Research and Evaluation from the same university. She continues to teach in the Master’s and PhD programs of the School of Statistics and College of Education.



  3. Internet-Based Data Collection: Fundamentals of Webscraping

    Participants will be equipped with the skills to utilize data from various sources in the Internet. With webscraping, the task of getting data becomes more efficient than merely copying and pasting. MS Excel and R will be used.

    Charlene Mae Celoso is an Assistant Professor from the UP School of Statistics. She obtained her BS Statistics degree from UP Diliman in 2015, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She has obtained her MS Statistics degree last year from the same institution. As an instructor, she has handled courses in elementary statistics, introduction to programming, introduction to exploratory data analysis, and introduction to regression analysis. She has also served as a resource person in workshops on introduction to R programming and time series analysis.



  4. Developing Computer Aided Personal Interviewing (CAPI) Applications Using CSPro and Survey Solutions

    The training aims to equip participants with the fundamentals of using new technologies like smartphones and tablets for more efficient data collection. It focuses on developing Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing CAPI) applications using tools like Survey Solutions and CS Pro.

    Karina Paz Bacuyag is currently the Officer-in-Charge of the Systems Development Division (SDD) of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). Her division is in charge of the design and development of information systems used to process various censuses and survey undertakings, and support systems that allow management quick access to the database information for analysis and decision-making.

    She has handled household-based surveys and census projectts like (1) Labor Force Survey, (2) Consumer Expectation Survey, (3) Annual Indicator Survey, (4) 2018 Family Income and Expenditure Survey, (5) Census of Population and Housing and (6) Census of Agriculture and Fisheries where CS Pro was the main development tool used, and also lead the project Listing of Farm Household where Survey Solutions was the tool used for the development.

    She started her career with the National Statistics Office (NSO) in 2002 as a computer programmer II. She finished BS in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines, Diliman in 1998, and Masters in Information Technology from the Ateneo de Manila in 2009.

    Participants are advised to bring with them the following: (1) any android mobile device (tablet or cellphone) and (2) laptop computer . These will be used during application development and testing. Participants can do the exercises individually or by group.
